Sarah has donated to our drawing one (1) medium-size fleece Papoose pouch and one (1) trim all-in-one diaper. About Sarah and pollywogbabies.com: I have 3 children all raised as closely as possible in accordance with the ideas in The Continuum Concept. They are all breastfed, co-slept, worn in slings, intact, unvaccinated, all were natural births, but 2 out of the 3 are unassisted (UC) homebirthed, and, of course, cloth diapered! I wanted to stay at home with my babies; and once I had my 3rd, I had found that I really enjoy helping other moms. My entrance into the web as a WAHM sewing diapers helps me to connect with more moms than ever! I'm doing something that I know helps out in a big way, and introducing women to another side of parenting by educating and encouraging healthy parenting styles. Locally, I am known as "the diaper lady" with something for everyone. I've cloth diapered all 3 children and have dabbled in EC with my 3rd. I've tried literally every diaper imaginable and can help you find your favorite diaper too. Sarah has the following show-and-tell items with her: My handmade products will be on display for examples with a few for sale at the time of the show--including 100% merino wool, fleece and PUL diaper covers, my special new super trim all-in-ones in bright solids and wonderfully bold prints, organic cotton and hemp-fitted diapers in side snap or front snap, handpainted covers and matching diaper/t-shirt sets, OSFA (one-size fits all) from birth to potty training diapers in every style, tie diapers, prefolds, Terry Flats, contours, trifolds, doublers, cloth wipes, washable wet bags, big swaddling blankets, and of course my favorite fleece Papoose pouch baby slings. CLOTH DIAPERING Presenter: Annik Miller e-mail: dwiese@mn.rr.com Annik will conduct a mini-class on Cloth Diapering. She also is set up at a table with Cloth Diapering products and information. About Annik: When I was pregnant with my first child, my mother asked me if I planned on using cloth diapers. I said, "No way, are you crazy?" However, after just a few weeks of life with a newborn, I was horrified by the amount of diaper waste we were generating, not to mention the cost of disposable diapers. And the Diaper Genie drove me nuts--so much plastic and a pain to use. So, when our son was four months old, we officially switched to cloth diapers. I spent hours on the Internet researching all of the different options and was utterly overwhelmed. However, once I started using cloth diapers, I was hooked. Who knew diapering could be so much fun? Now we have two boys in cloth and still love hanging freshly laundered diapers on the clothes line. The unofficial title of my mini-class is "These Are Not Your Mother's Cloth Diapers." First, why choose cloth? I will give a brief overview of the environmental impact of disposable diapers and the cost of disposables vs. cloth. Then I will show you the different types of cloth diapers and covers and demonstrate how to use them. I will have lots of examples on hand for you to check out, made by both WAHMs (work at home moms) and industry leaders. We will talk about where to buy diapers and money saving tips, including where to buy used diapers. Finally, we will explore nighttime diapering options and the most important thing of all: how to wash your diapers. Annik has the following show-and-tell items with her: I will have plenty of diaper examples. Please bring a pen and paper if you're a note taker. He will discuss the background and the key points of the book, and then focus on applying it to everyday life. About Kenny: I believe any honest reading of The Continuum Concept will transform the way one views infants, children, parenting, and people in general. The book deepened my love and respect for my son, and provided a context for understanding the world around us. Although the book is a critique of our society, it is also optimistic in that it gives us hope that we can raise uniquely happy, confident, well-adjusted children. About Amy: My husband and I planned on using a crib. Then our son was born 5 weeks early and our ideas of childcare drastically changed. I discovered in the hospital I couldn't sleep if I wasn't touching my baby. I was worried if he was making noise and if he wasn't. My parents offered to buy us a mattress for the crib and I said I wanted a co-sleeper instead. From that point, our family has begun the warm and wonderful tradition of sharing our bed. Now, a year later, we have learned from our son how to make this experience a joy for all of us. About Janine: I am a first-time mom to 9-month-old Gus; and my partner and I are committed to natural family living. I have spent the past nine months, plus the previous nine, learning all that I can about the best, natural ways to raise our son. Over the past year and a half, I have come to the realization that the Metro area could benefit from not only more brick and mortar locations to purchase natural products from, but also a space for families to gather in community and learn from one another. From this, I kept saying, "Someone should open a natural family store/resource center/community center." So far, everyone that I have said this to has whole-heartedly agreed. I have begun to do research to determine if such an organization is needed and feasible and want to continue the dialogue I have begun with other natural families. About Erin: I will do a short "sharing our/my experience" explanation of the structure of my "tribe" with Hannah Powers, conduct a presentation on the helpful principles that Hannah and I worked out, and then lead a brainstorming session/discussion on open questions like some of these: - how do you bring up the subject of forming a tribe with another family? - what kinds of paradigm shifts are necessary to make it work? (usually around the topics of intimacy, etc.) - in what areas do you need to have similar values and in what areas can there be a diversity? (for example, in our "tribe" we all have similar parenting styles, similar socioeconomic background, similar educational background, and are all homeschoolers, but there are some philosophical differences, for example, our politics and our religious practices are pretty different.) - do you need to start with some "rules" or do you need to make them up as you go along? - how important is consistency? HOMESCHOOLING / UNSCHOOLING Presenter: Nickie Kerrigan e-mail: helping44hands@yahoo.com Nickie will conduct a Q-and-A session on Homeschooling/Unschooling. She also has a table set up with additional information. About Nickie: I started out "Homeschooling" and did this for one year. Then saw the need to "Unschool". I was the first home-educator to report to my district. I had to inform them what the law said, and that it was indeed legal to home-educate my own children. I then went on to home-educate 3 children for a total of 12 years. My oldest son was motivated and loved structure. My daughter, #2, hated structure and was dyslexic with mild ADD. My #3 son was a global learner and hated to write. So, as I faced challenges with their learning styles and my teaching style, we made it through; they even came out ahead of their peers. They are today great adults. Not to say that they are perfect, but all are stable and caring adults. Jessica has donated to our drawing two (2) gift certificates for a free session of classes (a value of $147 each). About Jessica and Music Together: I am a mom of three children, ages 2 1/2 to 8. When I became a mother, I wanted to have my son with me as I worked; so I began watching children in my home. When I had my 2nd child, I found I needed something else to do. In looking for other work opportunities, I found Music Together and started teaching in 2000. My children were able to be with me, as well as be exposed to a rich musical environment in their early years. Now, 5 1/2 years later, my husband and I have opened a community music studio, and are sharing the joy of family music with over 200 families. Music Together has enriched my life more than words can say; when asked, I can honestly say I think I have the best job in the world! Music Together is a music and movement approach to early childhood development for infants, preschoolers, kindergarten children and their parents, teachers, or other primary caregivers. Originally offered in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a researched-based, developmentally-appropriate curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement. The Music Together approach develops every child’s birthright of basic music competence (the ability to sing in tune and keep a steady beat), by encouraging the actual experiencing of music rather than the learning of concepts or information about music. Through singing, dancing, chants and playing instruments, children are exposed to a variety of musical styles and tonalities. Each family receives 2 CDs and a songbook so the music making can continue at home. The non-threatening and performance-pressure-free atmosphere provides a comfortable and fun environment in which everyone is able to participate at which ever level they feel comfortable. The classes are mixed-aged, so the entire family can come to a class to experience the joy of music together. Jessica has the following show-and-tell items with her: Registration forms if anyone is interested, articles to hand out, newsletters, songbooks to look at as well as some cards for a free class. She is also set up at a table with additional information. Sara has donated to our drawing four (4) baby books. About Sara and Babytime Hello! My name is Sara Waters. I have a M.S. in Library and Information Science with all my experience (10-plus years) being specifically in Child/Youth Librarianship. I am also a musician with my first instrument being the violin. And finally, and most importantly, I am a busy mother of two children (ages 4 1/2 and 1 1/2). I developed Babytime, combining my experience and talents, because I could not find quality "book and baby" programs after my son was born. Babytime is amazing and fun. But what is Babytime? Babytime is a special time for you and your little one to interact in a positive and fun way. These 30 minutes of fun have been developed over the past 10 years of my experience as a Children's Librarian, a storytime leader and busy mother of two. Babytime is geared for babies, birth to two years of age; and it includes books, music, puppets and rhymes. During our time together, I offer many ideas on how to use language, books and music in your home. I use repetition so you and your baby will learn to recognize the rhythms and sound patterns. Your baby will begin to respond with sounds and actions and feel proud to be able to join in the fun. Research has shown that babies' brains (ages 0-3) respond in amazing ways to this type of stimulus. Join in and see for yourself. It's Baby Power!
