HOMEBIRTH BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS
Jenni: Heart and Hands by Elisabeth Davis (maybe you already know of it).  It is a great book to get more familiar with home birth from the midwife's perspective.  It has been updated quite a few times.  In the edition I had from the 80's, there was a great list of questions to ask when interviewing a potential midwife.
Kerry Dixon: read some books like Ina May Gaskin she has two the classic Spiritual Midwifery and a more recent one whose title escapes me, Barbara Harper Gentle Birth Choices and the Pregnancy Book by Martha and Wm Sears. Of course the internet is full of interesting sources. Barbara Harpers waterbirth website is good. Get a list a questions together and then contact midwives. As you are interviewing them they are doing a screening process too. Most want to meet in-person--which I think you would want too. Think about what is important to you and your family at this sacred time.
Allison: The book BABYCATCHER by Peggy Vincent is a very entertaining book about her life as a midwife. And any book by Carl Jones is good, as far as preparing for birth.
MIDWIFE TITLES and MIDWIFERY ORGANIZATIONS (source: http://www.birth-center.com/know-your-midwife.html)
Direct-Entry Midwives
"Direct-entry" midwives, who are licensed in some states, are not required to become nurses before training to be midwives. The Midwifery Education and Accreditation Council (MEAC) is currently accrediting direct-entry midwifery educational programs and apprenticeships in the United States. Direct-entry midwives' legal status varies according to state, and they practice most often in birth centers and in homes.
Certified Professional Midwives
Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) may gain their midwifery education through a variety of routes. They must have their midwifery skills and experience evaluated through the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) certification process and pass the NARM written Examination and Skills Assessment. The legal status of these nationally credentialed direct-entry midwives varies from state to state. In some of the states where they are also individually licensed, midwives' services are reimbursable through Medicaid and private insurance carriers.
Certified Nurse-Midwives
Certified-Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are educated in both nursing and midwifery. To earn the CNM credential, individuals must graduate from an education program that has been accredited by the ACNM Division of Accreditation. Graduates, who have earned at least a bachelors degree, must then pass the ACNM Certification Council, Inc. (ACC) exam. CNMs are licensed to practice in 50 states and provide primary health care to women, with a focus on maternity and gynecological services. CNMs practice most often in hospitals and birth centers.
Certified Midwives
Certified Midwives (CMs) are also graduates of ACNM accredited education programs who have carried at least a bachelors degree and passed the ACC certification exam. These individuals who are prepared to provide the same scope of service as their CNM colleagues, do not have to be registered nurses.
